Scotland's Top JOMO Destinations For 2025

Move over FOMO, there’s a new travel trend in town. While many travellers seek Instagram-worthy attractions and tourist hot spots, there’s something special about diving head-first into a less-crowded destination where you can really unwind.

Enter JOMO; the “joy of missing out” offers a new way to see the world, allowing travellers to fully embrace the moment.

In order to discover the leading JOMO-worthy destinations the UK has to offer, we felt there was no better place to start than honing in on bonnie Scotland🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. Known around the world for stunning scenery, refreshing lakes, and a laid-back way of life - Scotland ticks all of the boxes for a JOMO trip🤩.

To uncover the top Scottish destinations which capture the essence of JOMO, FlixBus conducted a study comparing over 30 Scottish towns and villages considering including number of nature parks, spas, wellness centres, minimum temperatures, sunshine and rainfall as well as how locations are cropping up in Google searches.

Let’s delve in and help inspire your next JOMO trip💚:

What is JOMO?

JOMO, the “joy of missing out”, reflects a conscious decision to opt for the lesser known. It’s about choosing a destination and travel itineraries that matter most to you, whether they are typical tourist spaces or not.

JOMO travel destinations don’t always top the list of “must-visit” attractions or “must-eat” local delicacies, but they do deliver less pressure.

For example, a JOMO holiday provides the opportunity to disconnect from the day-to-day and the “always on” culture. It’s a trip that focuses on getting away so you can focus on yourself. Think less digital distractions, more time in the present and space to reflect.

As the opposing term to FOMO, which can trigger a pressure to document your every move, JOMO travel encourages you to take a more mindful approach.

What are the top five Scottish destinations for JOMO travel?

Our index analysis uncovered a range of JOMO-worthy Scottish villages and towns, but we’ve narrowed it down to the top five destinations, so you can check out where to go at a glance.

Whether you board a FlixBus service from AberdeenGlasgow or Edinburgh, each destination has available public transport connections to travel to with ease. Keep in mind - if you have a Young Scot or bus pass, you can travel by coach in Scotland for free!

1.St Andrews

Renowned for being the “home of golf”, the seaside town of St. Andrews comes in first place as the ultimate Scottish JOMO destination. Approximately an hour away from Fife, the coastal town scored an overall 55 out of 100 due to its abundance of JOMO experiences. Whether you plan an entire trip here or visit for a day from Aberdeen or Edinburgh, you’re sure to start relaxing as soon as the fresh sea air hits you.

A key part of JOMO travel is choosing experiences that resonate with you, and if that’s unwinding in nature, you’re spoilt for choice in St Andrews. For sights, sounds, and wildlife, St Andrews Botanic Garden provides 18 acres to explore, while Tentsumir National Nature Reserve is a haven for coastal walks and wildlife.

For those seeking a wellness-inspired break, the seaside town is also home to six spa and wellness centres; the most of any other Scottish location in our list. Kohler Water Spa offers the quintessential spa experience for those in need of a spot of TLC. Whether you are looking for deep relaxation in a toasty sauna or you are feeling daring enough to try a cold plunge pool, Kohler has you covered.

St Andrews is also home to Scotland’s first ever university, with the town supporting a rich student community. If you’re looking to check out the town’s bustling bar crawl scene, Main Bar, Sandy’s Bar, Beacon Bar and The Centurion are popular student pubs to visit for a more lively trip.

Finally, further locally-loved ‘institutions’ which are popular in the community include The Crystal Shop and Jannettas Gelateria. The Crystal Shop, which has been on the go since 1997, is a magical trove for crystal shopping 🔮. For ice cream lovers, Jannettas offers a whopping 54 flavours of ice cream to choose from, based on a 100-year-old Italian recipe🍦.

St Abbs Harbour is also a great spot for refreshments as you watch the world go by. Ebbcarrs Cafe is a small cafe on the harbour front offering fresh local seafood, home bakes and local ales for an afternoon tipple.

JOMO travel is all about finding your balance, and local experiences can be a key part of this. St Abbs Market is a popular local activity to explore while you’re here. This hub offers local arts, crafts, gifts, and local produce - perfect for souvenir shopping before you head home.

 4.Ayr

With a rich literary history and links to famous poet, Robert Burns, the seaside town of Ayr offers a peaceful escape for JOMO travellers. Scoring 51 out of 100 within our index, Ayr still ranks highly for JOMO travel amongst Scottish towns and villages despite its larger size.

Located on the southwest coast of Scotland, Ayr is a hub of natural beauty. From coastal paths and large green spaces to the stunning, sandy Ayr Beach, it’s the definition of JOMO travel.

Methodology

We created a weighted rank index to curate a list of Scottish destinations where travellers can fully embrace ‘soft travel’. The index is based on the following eight factors, all weighted with an equal weighting per factor to give a final ranking score out of 100. Data correct as of April 2025.

Number of Nature & Parks Attractions Per Capita: Sourced from TripAdvisor via Nature & Parks attractions in each destination that had 20+ reviews. The total number was then weighted per capita based on the population of the destination from the Scottish Census.

4*+ Ratings of Nature & Parks Attractions: The combined number of 4* and 5* reviews for each attraction on TripAdvisor

Number of Spas, Wellness Centres, and Spa Hotels Per Capita: Spas and Wellness Centres were collected from TripAdvisor and Britain's Finest for results within a 15 mile radius of the town centre of each destination. Spa Hotels were collected from TripAdvisor hotel listings in each destination that provided a spa option. The total number was then weighted per capita based on the population of the destination from the Scottish Census.

Reviews Rating of Spas, Wellness Centres, and Spa Hotels: The average Google Reviews rating of each Spa, Wellness Centre, and Spa Hotel in each destination

Travel Related Google Searches per Month: The average monthly UK Google Searches over the last 12 months for the following keywords - digital detox [destination], holidays in [destination], hotels in [destination], places to see in [destination], places to stay in [destination], things to do in [destination], tourist attractions in [destination], tourist sites in [destination], train to [destination], trains to [destination], travel to [destination], visit [destination]. The destinations with the lowest number of searches were weighted the highest to favour "hidden gem" destinations. Search data collected from Ahrefs.

Average Minimum Temperature, Average Hours of Sunshine & Average mm of Rainfall: Based on Met Office data
